Duni AB acquires majority stake in BioPak

Swedish packaging manufacturer acquires 75 per cent stake in Australian and NZ packaging company.

Swedish packaging manufacturer Duni AB has acquired a 75 per cent stake in Australian packaging company, BioPak.

Founded in 2006 BioPak is a supplier of sustainable and disposable packaging in Australia and New Zealand. Its products include coffee cups, takeaway containers, straws, biodegradable checkout bags and bin liners.

Last year BioPak launched its composting service for food service packaging, including paper coffee cups, in a move designed to divert food scraps and food service packaging from landfill. The service enables  customers in Australia and New Zealand to dispose of used coffee cups and BioPak compostable takeaway food packaging in specially designed collection bins at their local cafes or workplaces.

Under the new agreement, BioPak’s three subsidiaries will be consolidated under the Business Area New Markets as part of Duni Group. BioPak will remain a separate company and continue to trade as BioPak. BioPak founders Gary Smith and Richard Fine will still be active in the company and part of the management team.

BioPak said the deal will launch its range of sustainable packaging items across Europe and the Asia Pacific region and will provide a platform for long-term international expansion.

BioPak CEO Gary Smith said the partnership is a great opportunity to reduce plastic pollution and fight the war on waste on a global scale.

“BioPak started back in 2006 with a simple vision – a world without waste. We were first to market offering sustainable, environmentally adapted packaging in Australia, expanding soon after to New Zealand,” Smith said.

“Since then, BioPak has experienced unprecedented growth and we are delighted to partner with Duni in taking our ethos to the global stage, working with a company that shares our values in sustainability and customer prioritisation.”

Duni CEO Johan Sundelin said the company delighted to partner with BioPak and champions their innovative packaging solutions in reducing waste and the negative environmental impacts of single-use foodservice packaging.

“We have admired BioPak’s consistent promise to provide sustainable products to the foodservice industry, and are now looking forward to collaborating with Gary, Richard and their fantastic team in our common mission,” Sundelin said.

BioPak’s Richard Fine said the deal will allow BioPak to rapidly scale.

“With Duni’s scale and our influence, we now have an opportunity and the resources to solve the environmental problems associated with single-use disposable packaging on a global scale. We will continue to expand our influence in the industry and play a positive role in society.”

BioPak said it will continue to expand and grow across Australia and New Zealand to sell compostable and recyclable packaging, and proceed to roll out its waste minimisation initiative – the recently launched BioPak Compost Service.
