More speakers have been announced for the upcoming Australasian Restoration Industry Conference.
Joining the lineup is Jeremy Stamkos, principle consult, Eronmor; Brian Murphy, managing director of EHS Assess and Larry Carlson, industry manager and international sales manager, Phoenix Restoration Equipment.
Stamkos will examine the standard guide for assessment fungal growth in buildings, giving an overview of this standard and how assessments conducted in accordance with it can help prevent controversy.
Stamkos will also present on fire and smoke damage assessments, and provide an overview of what is involved in properly assessing a property affected by fire and smoke damage. He will also cover the types of related contamination and why it is important for a proper assessment to be conducted.
Murphy will discuss the hidden dangers of silica dust, addressing what silica dust is, how it affects health, where it impacts the restoration industry and what measures restorers can implement to manage it.
Carlson will examine new technologies for water damage restoration such as 3D cameras, ‘connected’ equipment, the importance of data collection and data integrity, equipment tracking and job documentation.
The speakers join the event’s keynotes, business consultant Chuck Violand and industry veteran Art Johnson.

Training on offer
Certified training will also be on offer during the three-day event, with the Contents Science and Theory (CST) course to run in conjunction with the RIA Conference & Tradeshow.
Penny Tralau, managing director of Mould Rescue and RIA education committee chairperson, said it is the first time the Contents Science and Theory (CST) course will be held in Australia.
“We are very excited that one of RIA’s leading instructors Art Johnson will be coming from Canada to teach the course. This is a comprehensive two day lecture-based course. The content is 98 per cent applicable to anything the restoration professional may encounter, dealing with the science of how to restore personal property damaged due to fire, smoke, flood or disaster,” Tralau said.
“Intermediate to advanced restoration and theory will be covered, plus demonstrations will prepare the most experienced restoration trainees, estimators, or supervisors for evaluating different degrees of damage and selecting methods for safe and effective restoration, be it contents, furniture, oriental and specialty rugs or period furniture styles.”
The course, which is a pre-requisite to the higher RIA designation of Contents Loss Specialist (CLS), will also cover period furniture (antiques), textiles (upholstery, oriental rugs, window coverings), identification and inspection, particles and residues, cleaning and deodorising, electronic restoration and wood restoring and refinishing.
The Australasian Restoration Industry Conference will be held at Twin Waters Novotel on the Sunshine Coast from 12 June to 14 June. The three-day event will conclude with the RIA Gala Dinner, where the 2019 RIA Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented.
Globally, RIA represents more than 20,000 cleaning and restoration professionals from 1100 member firms specialising in textiles, environmental issues and restoration. The association’s local arm was first established as a steering committee in 2015. In 2017 the RIA approved the formation of an Australasian council, giving its Australian and NZ counterparts a seat on the board of directors.
