Method moves to 50 per cent recycled content

Method bin bases to be made from 50 per cent recycled polypropylene.

Wellington-based company Method has announced its bin bases will be made from 50 per cent recycled polypropylene, following a successful initial production run in November 2018.

Method co-founder Steven Korner said the introduction of recycled material is a small but exciting step in the development of Method’s products.

“At its core, Method believes in facilitating the circular economy, capturing recyclable materials and diverting them from landfill,” he said.

“Incorporating recycled content has been an important focus for us since we began, but it’s taken a lot of research, trial and error and many technical difficulties.”

Over the past three years, the designer and manufacturer of office recycling bins has received criticism for using virgin recyclable polypropylene.

“But we believed in the process and journey that we were on. Seeing this come to life is truly exciting,” said Korner.

“Even more so, seeing the recycling infrastructure we are a part of capturing resources for the development of our own products.”

Method designs and manufactures recycling bins for the modern workplace. With its head office in Wellington, the company sells its bins to countries around the world, including Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore. Method now has offices in Auckland, Sydney and London.

Korner said the process of introducing recycled content was undertaken with great consideration to ensure the durability, life-span and the high-quality finish of the product wasn’t reduced.

“Method’s in house sustainability and research and design teams have been working continuously to find a material of consistent quality and sufficient supply that is able to be used in the manufacturing process of their signature bins.”

Method’s new bins are as durable with the recycled content as they were when made from virgin materials; and can be completely recycled and made into new bins.

Method are currently working on a solution that means the bins can be made from 100 per cent recycled materials.
