10.  Bidvest acquires Consolidated Property Services

In September, South African industrial group Bidvest acquired Consolidated Property Services (CPS) from its private shareholders.

At the time, the acquisition was expected to double the group’s facilities management footprint in Australia and followed the purchase of Sydney-based BIC Services by Bidvest in July 2022.

9. WasteCo expands to Central Otago and Southland

In May, South Island waste company WasteCo announced it was expanding its reach into Central Otago and Southland following the purchase of three businesses in those regions.

8. RapidClean Group continues to deliver growth

The Rapid Group celebrated another successful year of growth at the co-operative’s annual conference held in Fiji in October. The 2022/23 financial year had a number of highlights for the Rapid Group, which continues to build on its five-year growth plan launched at the group’s 2022 conference in Sydney.

In May, OCS Australia and New Zealand released its 2022 Sustainability Report, highlighting the facilities management services group’s commitment to people, partnerships, and carbon reduction.

6. ISS CEO announces resignation

In March, ISS announced CEO Jacob Aarup-Andersen had submitted his resignation to the company’s board of directors. Aarup-Andersen had served as the company’s CEO since he joined in September 2020.

5. OfficeMax to phase out petrol cars in latest sustainability initiative

In June, OfficeMax New Zealand announced it would phase out its fleet of conventional cars by the end of the year, instead embracing electric and hybrid models.

The move is in line with the company’s 2025 Sustainability Strategy, and will see 105 petrol cars phased out, with a reduced fleet of 95 cars being either electric (EV) or hybrid.

4. Solenis finalises purchase of Diversey for $4.6 billion

In July, Specialty chemical manufacturer Solenis, a portfolio company of Platinum Equity, announced it had completed its acquisition of Diversey.

The all-cash deal, valued at an enterprise value of approximately US$4.6 billion, was announced in early 2023, subject to customary closing approvals.

With the acquisition, Solenis has grown to an enterprise operating in more than 130 countries with 71 manufacturing facilities and more than 15,000 employees.

3. Minimum wage to rise

In February, it was announced that the minimum wage would increase by $1.50 an hour from 1 April.  At the time, Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said that the new rate of $22.70 per hour was part of a raft of changes to government plans.

2. 2023 ISSA Cleaning & Hygiene Expo expands to meet demand

In February, ISSA announced it had secured a larger space at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre for the 2023 ISSA Cleaning & Hygiene Expo, to accommodate the growing number of participants.

Held in Melbourne last month, the 33 per cent increase in hall spaced provided even more exhibitors with the opportunity to showcase their products and services on a larger scale, allowing them to reach a wider audience and engage with more potential customers.

1. Government announces new modern slavery legislation

In July, New Zealand’s Deputy Prime Minister Carmel Sepuloni announced the introduction of new modern slavery legislation that requires organisations and businesses to be transparent about their operations and supply chains through a new public register.

Under the proposed legislation, organisations with more than $20 million in revenue will be required to report and outline the actions they take to address exploitation risks in their operations and supply chains.
